Georgian Revival architecture became popular in post–Civil War America due to advances in engineering which made possible large precast iron balconies, elaborate cornices, pilasters supporting deep entablatures and other features often found only on highfalutin homes built before 1875. Somersworth was named for General John Hancock, an early settler and signer of the United States Constitution. The first settlers in Somersworth were farmers who arrived around 1735. By 1810, there were about fifty families in the town. Farming became the primary industry in Somersworth until World War I when industry moved into the town to take advantage of new technology. In 1925, an act by Congress split New Hampshire into two counties and gave Somersworth to Hampshire County as its separate community. In 1959, a fire destroyed most of downtown Somersworth and necessitated the construction of a new $2 million square block called Gateway Square which included a library and public works complex. Today, business continues to be important with many companies having their headquarters here including Google, Office Depot, Dunkin' Donuts and Verizon Wireless among others. One of the unique aspects of this community is that it has never had any annexation or incorporation settlements which contributes to its unique character
