Somersworth is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,575 at the 2010 census. Somersworth is part of the Manchester-New Haven metropolitan area. The name "Somersworth" comes from an ancient English settlement which was located on the border of what is now Somersworth and Union counties. On July 20, 1692, English colonists named the location Somersworth after Sir John Somers who had been sent by Parliament to make a survey of New England. The first settler in Somersworth was Samuel Fenton who built a cabin in 1745. He later married Susannah Webb and moved his family to this location where they lived for many years. In 1825, John Nash bought land here and started to build a mill which he renamed Nash's Mills after himself and his wife Julia - one of the towns first female mayors. In 1853, the mill was destroyed by fire but was rebuilt and became known as Nash's Mills again. It continued in operation until it closed in 1922 due to lack of demand from customers. In 1898, three men - Willard Chase Goodrich, George Hildebrandt and Frank Sperry - organized what would become known as the Granite State Machine Company which manufactured tools used in manufacturing businesses throughout New Hampshire (and parts thereof). For many years it operated out of good old Nash's Mills until it went out of business around 1920 because there were not enough consumers coming into town to justify its existence; however its legacy lives on through several successors that still operate today within New Hampshire – most notably Empire Tools & Hardware Co., Inc., founded 1966 by two former employees of Nash's Mills going back more than 50 years! Today Empire Tools & Hardware operates primarily out of their original facility on NH Route 3 just outside town limits – making them one-of-a-kind employers inNH!granitestate .

The first settlers in Somersworth were farmers who came from England during the mid-19th century. In 1836, General George Washington visited Somersworth and ordered his troops to march through it on their way to battle against Native Americans at Saratoga Creek. The town was incorporated as a village in 1847 and then became a town in 1886. Today, Somersworth is known for its large agricultural industry and its several manufacturing companies which produce products such as clothing, plastics, paper products, automobiles, furniture and other items. The town has also become home to several major universities including New Hampshire Institute of Technology (NHIT), Edward M. Smith College (EDMEC), Manchester University (MANU) and Wellesley College (WEL).
Somersworth was founded in 1742 by Capt. John Somers, who named the town after his father-in-law, Sir Ralph Somers. The first settler in Somersworth was Joseph Abbott, who built a small cabin on the east side of the river in 1745. In 1802, the town was incorporated as a village. In 1847, during the Vermont Gold Rush, Somersworth became one of the first towns to be settled in central New Hampshire when prospectors discovered gold near its banks. The town quickly became an important center for goods and services needed by miners and their families. By 1850, Somersworth had a population of about 100 people and it continued to grow until it reached its peak population of around 400 people in 1880. During World War II, Somersworth played an important role as a military base for the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. In 1951, the Army transferred ownership of the base from the U.S. government to local authorities and it has been used ever since as a community park and recreation area
