Somersworth was first settled in 1734 by Dr. John Somers, who was the owner of a large tract of land north of the Merrimack River. The town grew rapidly and by 1810 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1814, the town set up its own government and elected its first mayor, Absalom Bemis. In 1824, Somersworth became incorporated as a town and in 1830 the first school opened in the town. In 1865, Somersworth withdrew from New Hampshire and became an independent state within the United States. The town continued to grow until it had a population of just over 4500 people in 1980. Today, Somersworth is home to a number of businesses including Doctors Hospital & Clinics and North Valley Telephone Company
