In 1867, it became part of Hillsborough County and was named for General George Washington as his hometown for services during the American Revolution In 1906, major investments by Jepson Rubber Company led to rapid economic growth in Somersworth with new factories being built along Route 126 (later known as I-495). The town's economy soon centered around manufacturing and service businesses such as restaurants and convenience stores; however, some retail development has taken place since then including several department stores and a large mall called Gateway Mall On January 2nd, 2018 President Donald Trump announced he would be moving the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem On March 6th 2019 after more than two years of deliberation NH Governor Maggie Hassan signed into law House Bill 137 which allows any school district within NH to decide whether or not they want to make religious accommodations for students choosing to wear Eid al-Adha clothes or go without due process rights

Somersworth is part of the Manchester-by-the-Sea, NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the county seat of Hampshire County and home to the central courthouse for all of New Hampshire. The first permanent settlement in present day Somersworth was made on June 10, 1768 by Captain John Sellers and his men from Portsmouth inNH as part of an expedition seeking land grant from King George III. They named their new town "Newmarket." The first government document setting forth the town's boundaries was filed on July 8, 1768 with the court at Portsmouth. On May 24, 1798 a body called "An Act to establish a Court House in said Town" was passed by the General Court and signed by Governor Josiah Quincy. The cornerstone for what would eventually become Central Hall (now known as Hancock Hall) was laid September 20th 1801 when Judge Gideon Welles officiated at ceremonies led by Dr. Jonathan Edwards who had just been installed as President of Harvard College that same year In 1812, during Andrew Jackson's presidency, Newmarket became part of final victory over Britain following its War for America campaign which saw military engagements across North America including Battle of Saratoga which took place near here on October 7th 1812 It wasn't until after Independence that Newmarket started developing into what it now is with stores and businesses opening up throughouttown especially along Route 9W which became known as Main Street after local merchants such as Horace Greeley opened up shops there back in 1800 In 1825 Samuel Morse established his electric telegraph line through downtown from his shop located on Meetinghouse Lane . This event helped start modern day communication between North America and Europe starting with postcards In 1860 major construction began on Parsonage House currently used as the Somerset County Courthouse Annexe which included a jail cells , bakery & restaurant . This building served many purposes over time including serving as both courthouse & school district office until it burned down in 1984 By 1870 Somersworth had become one of only two towns within each state still functioning under its original charter having no consolidations or mergers occurring elsewhere while other communities within this county either disbanded or merged becoming Manchester–by-the-Sea while also adjoining towns essentially losing their residents except for those living inManchester proper
