Scope mounts have been a part of American rifle history for over a century. The first scope mount was designed by Samuel Colt in 1868. This design allowed rifles to be fired from a seated position with the use of a bipod or other stationary tripod. The new rifle featured an open-top barrel that allowed the user to sight it from any position within 100 yards using a dovetail mounting system. This innovative feature made Scope Mounts unnecessary, and they were discontinued completely in 1914. A few years later, Inverter Mounts were developed that combined an open-top barrel with a closed-off sighting mechanism to allow firing from any position within 100 yards using just one hand (the "One Hand"Gun). In 1828, Enoch Pratt began operations of what would become Pratts Manufacturing Company which manufactured maple syrup and other products from forest trees located just outside present-day Rochester. That same year saw another important event when voters approved a charter for Oneida County with its own government This new county had no connection with villages or counties within Onondaga County and only included areas east of Buffalo Creek including present-day Monroe Township and portions of Webster Parish (now Orleans Parish). From this location, Oneida County boasted an impressive infrastructure including two roads – one north to Utica (the capital city) and one south via Kingston to Albany (the statistical center). With this growing population came much development with many homes being built on Meeting Street in downtown Rochester; however Commercial Row still remains one of the most expensive streets in America due to its location close to major businesses A major early employer in downtown was Wm Bulfinch & Sons dyeing company which opened up shopin1829 opposite State House across from City Hall Fulton Iron Works opened up shopin 1830 on South Clinton Street next door to Pratts Manufacturing Company Today’s University Square Shopping Center occupies much of where Fulton Iron Works once stood
