Gun magazines have a long and varied history in Rochester, New Hampshire. The first gun magazine in the town was founded in 1827 by Captain John Greenough. This early gun magazine was located on Center Street and published a quarterly journal called the Rifleman. The first issue of the Rifleman featured an article about how to make your own shotgun using a weapon conversion kit. In 1830, Captain Greenough moved his magazine to what is now Main Street and continued publishing the Rifleman until 1842 when he sold it to Daniel Webster. In 1843, Webster merged the Rifleman with another local paper called the Herald to create what is now known as the Republican News-Letter. In 1847, President James K. Polk issued an executive order calling for all American newspapers nationwide to start printing rifle magazines containing 3-4 issues per month (meaning that gun magazines would continue being published sporadically even after Polk’s order). As part of this order, Colonel Amos Kendall started printing Gun McGraw’s Magazine which began publication on March 1st, 1847. The Gun McGraw’s Magazine was one of the earliest publications devoted exclusively to firearms and became well known for its exhaustive coverage of firearms topics including advice on firearm safety, reviews of new guns and ammunition, columns on various NRA meetings and events as well as feature articles about rifles from both amateur shooters and professional shooters! After lasting only five years due to financial difficulties caused by competitive pressures from other national publications such as Harper’s Ferry Arsenal Publications (now Frederick Douglass Publishing), Gun McGraw’s Magazine closed its doors for good on May 15th, 1850. Rochester also had its own private pistol club which met monthly at Washburne Hall between 1840-1860 where members could buy pistols fresh from France or Germany. Between 1840-1860 there were over 100 members total who contributed pistols for use at club meetings! pistols are still used today at club meetings in Rochester! In 1860, Colonel Amos Kendall reopened Gun McGraw’sMagazine under new ownership which included future Mayor John Ayer who served as publisher until 1865 when he joined General Sherman's staff in Europe during World War I thereby ending gun magazine publication in America altogether!

It is the second-largest town in New Hampshire after Manchester and is the seat of Beginnings County. Rochester is one of two towns in New Hampshire that are not part of the Boston metropolitan area. The name "Rochester" comes from an Iroquois word meaning place where people live fast and strong. The first European to visit what is now Rochester agreed that it was a very fine place to live because it had plenty of game and good water supply. In 1608, English traders arrived in search of fur resources and found this region rich with copper, lead, silver, tin, gold and other minerals. They named the new colony "Rochester" after their leader, Sir John Rochette (1596-1662), who had organized the original English trading posts along the Hudson River Valley. Twelve years later Nathaniel Hawthorne visited Rochester for his book Waverley Abbey In 1764 Samuel Higginson surveyed parts of western New Hampshire for George Washington as part of his survey for land grants under President George Washington's National Road program. He suggested naming a large tract east of present-day Rochester "New Castle." This proposal was rejected by General John Burgoyne as too Anglicizedsounding and he recommended calling the whole area simply "New Hampshire." The name stuck and today's Rochester derives its name from this first suggestion by Higginson or from some local legend which holds that a man wearing no clothes but with his head uncovered walked through central Rochester on July 4th while all around him people were wearing clothes because they felt embarrassed without coverings! The early settlers were farmers who grew corn, beans, peas, wheat and rye; they also raised cattle, horses and hogs. By 1820 there were over 2200 residents living in what became known as downtown Rochester when four blocks were platted out on May 30th as Coffee Row (later Elm Street). A smallpox outbreak in 1819 drove many farmers away to look for new pastures; however some returned later that year to find their homes destroyed by fire caused by lightning strike during a heavy rainstorm. One hundred years ago today (August 15th), on August 1st 1907 a severe storm swept through eastern New England causing widespread destruction including much damage to buildings in downtown Rochester including much loss of life including six women killed when their home caught on fire due to poor electrical wiring
