Macy Jr., and his brother-in-law, Wm. Calkins. Rochester was platted in 1794 by Captain Nathaniel Parker of Portsmouth as an addition to modern-day Hillsborough County. The first permanent settler arrived in what is now Rochester on December 12, 1794. They were led by Brigadier General John Prescott who had been ordered to establish a military post near Portsmouth for troops sent from Canada during the Seven Years' War. The first residents were male traders and their families who set up shop along Main Street which still exists today and became known as "The Town House District." Rochester's growth began with its location at the junction of two important transportation routes; one travelled eastward through towns like Concord and Nashua down river to Portsmouth while another ran northward through Rochester and Bellingham to Halifax via Boston. This interchange made Rochester an ideal hub for trade because it allowed goods from different parts of New England to be transported easily across the ocean without having to go through Philadelphia or Albany. In 1802, Chauncey Mudge purchased 4 acres (1 ha) northeast of downtown Rochester for $5 per acre (0.24 per km2). He named his land "Mudge's Meadow" after himself and founded Mudge's Mill which still stands today as one of the most historic mills in America. In 1806, Commodore Edward Preble established Fort Preble on Castle Island near present day Starbuck Harbor so that American warships could practice bombarding British positions off Salem Bay while supplies passed between Halifax and Boston overland. This event helped contribute to increased trade between America and Britain during the Revolutionary War era which helped make Rochester a major center of commerce throughout New Hampshire
