Portsmouth is home to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and the NH Maritime Museum. The town has a rich history dating back to 1635 when English Admiral John Smith set up his headquarters in this small town on the eastern coast of Portsmouth Bay. The first permanent settler in Portsmouth was Nicholas Boylston who arrived in 1635 from London. He and his family were granted land by the General Court of Massachusetts Bay on what is now known as Boylston Street. Other early settlers included Captn John Winthrop and Lt Col Samuel Adams who came with Captain John Smith during his voyages around 1637-38 and 1639-40 respectively. In 1705, Nathaniel Gorham purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) of land east of present day Main Street from Simon Yarmouth for $1 per acre (0.50 hectare). This area became known as Gorham's Necklace because it lay along the southern edge of Plymouth Sound which opened up after an earthquake destroyed much of the harborage used by the native people for fishing and trading purposes. In 1801, Commodore James Cook sailed into Plymouth Harbor for his third circumnavigation of Earth while carrying out scientific experiments aboard HMS Beagle; he named one point "Portsmouth" after this small town on his return trip some weeks later! During World War II, parts of Portsmouth were bombed by U-boats during Operation Neptune's Spear; however, most damage occurred within downtown areas which remain largely unscathed today! Today, Portsmouth remains an important commercial center with several major employers including NHMuseum shipyards PAE (now Lockheed Martin), Tyson Foods Inc., Shandwick Animation Studios LLP., GEICO Corporation., Chrysler Group LLC., and WMT Corporation.. Grant planned to build his new navy after victory over Mexico in1814. Commodore Dixon ordered construction of Fort Monmouth which began in 1817 and ended in 1827; it was one of America's earliest military installations outside of Europe During World War II (1939-1945), Portsmouth played an important role as one of two ports handling Britain's Overseas Shipping Administration cargo traffic between Great Britain and North America Portsmouth has experienced significant growth over recent decades due to nearby Manchester’s improving economy (and rising housing prices) – but some residents are concerned about whether or not their town will keep pace with this growth .
