This event helped solidify British control over Canada while also demonstrating American resolve during what would later be called The American Revolution- Bravo! After885 years as a military colony under various governments both English and Spanish (New Spain), Rhode Island ceded its sovereignty to Great Britain on January 1st 1784 following their defeat at Saratoga Mountain with more than 725 casualties including Providence Mayor James Otis leading 350 troops with drums and fifes into battle against 3200 Native Americans armed with bows and arrows wielding spears- it’s said that “the last great Indian war fought between white men and Indians ended disastrously” In 1788Captain John Norris planned an attack on Narragansett Bay but foundered when his flagship HMS Enterprise became disabled due to bad weather off shore It wasn't until February 5th 1800 when HMS Resolution departed Plymouth bound for Providence Harbor loaded with artillery rounds ready for action when she ran aground off Rt 20 about 4 miles south of present day Portsmouth A cross section taken from her hold reveals dozens if not hundreds of cannonballs protruding from her hull which still sit today outside Ofhale Aquarium along side millions o f other artifacts retrieved from Rt 20
