It is part of the Portsmouth-Newport News, NH Micropolitan Statistical Area. Portsmouth was founded by English colonists in 1624 and named for Sir John Pennington, 1st Baronet. The first permanent settler in Portsmouth was Simon Wills who arrived with his family in 1627. In 1629, Wills married Rebecca Killough and they started to build a house on what is now Main Street. In 1701, William Bradford built a log cabin on what is now North Quay Street. That same year saw the first printing press established in the colonies when Richard Stockton printed "The General Court Journal" from his home on King's Wharf. Portsmouth became an important port for shipping goods between England and America during this time period because of its location along the Manchester River. In 1814, Commodore James Ketchum establish Naval Station Portsmouth which served as a landing spot for American sailors seeking to invade Canada during the War of 1812. The station also housed barracks for American officers and their families as well as storehouses and warehouses used for storing war supplies such as munitions and foodstuffs. After Confederation, Naval Station Portsmouth fell apart because it was no longer needed after United States military forces moved ashore from ships off Maine’s coast in order to fight against Canada’s forces under Lake Erie Admiral George Haldane On July 1st 1815 USS Constitution’s Captain James Farragut landed troops at Plymouth Beach following three months long voyage from Boston Harbor HMS Warrior had been sent out previous day with stores but returned empty handed due to bad weather conditions off Cape Cod Commodore Perry later ordered USS Constitution herself sailed downriver loaded with troops under Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter

Portsmouth, New Hampshire is a town in Franklin County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 3,865 at the 2010 census. Portsmouth is one of the oldest settlements in what is now New Hampshire and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years. The town was founded on March 10, 1768 by Captain William Prescott as part of the townsite of Portsmouth Plantation. It became a city on July 1, 1911. Portsmouth’s history can be traced back to the early eighteenth century when it was part of the Plymouth Colony. In 1630, Captain John Smith sailed through Portsmouth Harbor with his expedition led by Rear Admiral Richard Saltonstall and discovered significant landmass which would become known as New England. In 1768, Lieutenant Colonel William Prescott organized a group of men to build a house on land that later became known as Portsmouth Plantation. On March 10th of that year, they set out from Plymouth with sixteen men including Drury Lane Tavern keeper John Davenport and local carpenter James Webb to establish their new community within what would become Franklin County. Three days later they arrived at what is today called Main Street and began construction on their first home which would soon become known as The Head House (later renamed The George). By May 7th the colonists had erected nine homes and Lt Col Prescott ordered them to move into their first floor dwelling until they could erect additional structures- which never happened due to lack of funding or interest from local officials. It wasn't until after Captain Prescott's death in 1799 that work started earnestly on building permanent dwellings for the townspeople- this time with help from Major General Nathanael Greene who donated land for development along Route 9W approximately two miles away from The Head House (later renamed barracks #1). With access to better transportation resources and more reliable financing methods thanks to Revolutionary War veterans such as Colonel John Sullivan and Major General Benedict Arnold who contributed funds raised through sales taxes levied against landowners in western NH – Portsmouth quickly attained its current growth pace throughout much of the nineteenth century thanks largely to its strategic location within Franklinshire just minutes' walk from both Boston MA & Philadelphia PA! In 1810 Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote: "The only thing that I have seen in America more strange than this village - more wonderful even - are these great rocks near us; there are several feet thick solid granite hills about three quarters of a mile distant." Over time these large boulders were quarried down and used for support purposes for various buildings throughout Portsmouth including Public School #2 now occupied by Veterans Affairs Hospital #3 acrossRoute 9W from where Hawthorne penned his famous essay “The Marble Faireys” back in 1847! Today you can visit some remaining remnants of these massive supports systems still visible perched atop someOf those granite hills just outside of town limits! On July 1st 1911 Portsmouth became an incorporated city under state law following ratification by voters via referendum!! This momentous event marks not only an expansion into greater municipal boundaries but also signaled a change in relationship between City & Town Government with respect to many important services & amenities currently offered courtesy Of City Manager Edward Gaspard Browning (& others) !! As part of this process Of Municipal Renewal / Codification formalities were completed ensuing A Year Long Process culminating On December 15th 2001 With Mayor Dean Hickey Presenting Results To A room full Of Citizens!!! After More Than Two Hours OF PUBLIC HEARING resultant From Written Submissions mailed In Prior +++ ++ ++ ++ ++++ +++ +++++++++ we Were able to Approve All Changes Necessary For Repealing/Amending Laws Relating To City Operations Effective January 1st 2002 !!
Portsmouth was founded in 1624 as a trading post on the Portsmouth River. The town was named after the English city of Portsmouth, England. The first courthouse in Portsmouth was built in 1792. In 1814, the United States Congress established Fort Donelson as a military post on the outskirts of town to protect American shipping lanes from British aggression. In 1815, the fort became known as Fort Fisher after Commodore John C. Farragut's successful victory over HMS "Triton" off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina coast. The town grew rapidly and by 1838 it had a population of over 25,000 people. By 1860, Portsmouth had become an important center for maritime trade and its economy declined during the American Civil War because of increased Confederate forces at sea and on land. On July 10, 1862, Union General George McClellan attacked Fort Donelson without warning and destroyed it with artillery fire; this ended any hope of further resistance by Confederate forces within Portsmouth limits. With its strategic importance diminished, Portsmouth slowly declined until 1975 when it merged with neighboring Gosport to form one municipality called Portsmouth-Gosport
