This new design allowed for easier unlocking and locking of guns without having to remove each individual pawl individually. Gun locks continued to be used through World War II (1939-1945) and into present day times. Today, many people still rely on gun locks for protection against theft or vandalism.

The town was founded by Increase Mather on December 12, 1711 as part of a larger settlement around that name about 15 miles (24 km) north of Boston. In 1846 it became the seat of government for northern New England when Boston was moved south to avoid being overwhelmed by behalf of slavery in Georgia. After years of decline during the 20th century due to lack of development and industrial growth, Portsmouth regained some prominence as a commercial center starting in the 21st century but has since experienced modest population growth. The history of Portsmouth goes back many years before it became an incorporated town in 1711. As early as 1636 there were people living near what is now Portsmouth Harbor who knew about a large island in that harbor named "Hooksett". This island had been mentioned by several English sailors who had visited that region during their travels along the coastlines of North America during early colonial times. It wasn't until 1660 when Increase Mather first set foot on land near present-day downtown Portsmouth after sailing from London via Cape Cod Bay to Massachusetts Bay on his way to serve as pastor at Salem Cathedral. When he arrived he found many Native Americans living near his shipyard and fledgling town began taking form around him - primarily through trade with these natives which helped support increased trade activity throughout those years leading up to both English settlements establish themselves within our area known today as New England while also spreading westward under English rule over time... Dutch traders also operated outposts along this same coastline before Plymouth Colony got established circa 1621-1624." Mather's arrival inspired others in eastern Massachusetts to take note of this isolated location and soon more settlers poured into what would become called Plymouth Colony; however, much like today's Plymouth residents did not have any comprehension or awareness about Plymouth Bay - only aware that they were located close enough for them to send goods eastwards but too far away from anything else happening within their vicinity... It wasn't until after Captain John Smith sailed past Hooksett Island on July 26, 1614 while exploring possible passage between Provincetown Plantation (now Quincy) colonial port on Cape Cod Bay and Jamestown (now Williamsburg), Virginia that anyone realized there might be something valuable hidden within these waters... Smith may have been unaware at the time just how vast Hooksett Harbor actually looked but what he did know was there must be another means of exporting goods needed for European colonists living ashore so he decided against returning home without further exploration." It wasn't until Governor John Winthrop arrived in October 1629 aboard HMS Beagle off Massachusettes Shoals after departing Plymouth Colony with supplies bound for South Carolina instead that someone finally realized just how great an opportunity this remote outpost had become given its location deep inside enemy territory... Soon afterwards Winthrop made contact with local First Nations leader sachem Massasoit who allowed British settlers access exclusive hunting grounds surrounding his village providing food and shelter while also allowing craftsmen from nearby Dartmouth College access toll free status for making cannons using potash mined from nearby cliffs..." "Winthrop quickly realized just how advantageous this spot could be given its strategic location sandwiched between two powerful coastal Indian nations; furthermore," Winthrop continued "the Indians allowed us access because they believed we would behave responsibly here whereas other colonizers at similar sites downeast had caused great harm by engaging in open warfare against them." "In fact," said historian Dorthy O'Brien regarding Winthrops interactions with local tribes "he seems almost like one Of Our Own... He took great interest not only in our welfare but also saw eye-to-eye with us about most things." Although initially apprehensive about trusting individuals from outside their respective cultures completely following such daunting footsteps into unknown territory; eventually winthrop came to see value not only in having friendly relationships WITH indigenous peoples but even more so developing cultural exchange programs which ultimately led to significant benefits both physically & economically…"
