Portsmouth was founded by Captain John Smith on December 5, 1609 as an English Settlement on the southern tip of Long Island Sound. It became a U.S. port during World War II and now has a population of over 30,000 people who live in seven municipalities: Portsmouth-Hampshire (town), Hampton (city), Dunster (village), Plattsburgh (town), Osterville (village), and North Hampton (county). The other villages are Amherst and Easton. The first permanent settlers were white men from England who arrived in 1610 under the leadership of Captain John Smith with HMS "Adventure" and took up land that would become Portsmouth. They named their new settlement after Lord Sandwich's flagship HMS " Sandwich ". The town charter was granted on February 25, 1611 by Queen Anne to Lieutenant Colonel Edmund Andros . Andros built two churches - one for Anglicans and one for Huguenots - along with schoolhouses and other public buildings including the first piers in America which were completed in 1612. In 1776, during the American Revolution, Portsmouth sided with Great Britain against the United States of America. On September 11th of that year British forces attacked USS Constitution within gunfire range off shore; it resulted in injury to many Americans including Commodore George Washington's son-in-law Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson while also resulting in three British sailors being killed when they got too close to the shipwrecked vessel anchored offshore On December 6th 1775 General Philip Schuyler's army crossed into Massachusetts Bay at what is now known as Battle Hill near present day Portsmouth The battle resulted in a strategic victory for Schuyler allowing his army to march unimpeded into New York City where he captured Fort Nassau without opposition from Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison or any American warships present Aftermath of this engagement saw Generals Howe & Clinton move south towards Manhattan to join up with Morison It was only after weeks long fighting that British soldiers reached Albany where they pillaged much civilian property before withdrawing back across Kingston Bridge led by General Cornwallis As part of peace negotiations following the war Philadelphia offered autonomy for New Hampshire should it declare itself independent but no such decision was taken In 1802 Middlesex County merged into Kings County due to increasing growth rates around Portsmouth although Newport remained separate until 1820 when it united with Charlestown forming what is today known as Rhode Island Avenue
