The town started off as a farming community but soon became an important port for goods travelling between NH and Canada. In 1837 Portsmouth became capital of NH when it replaced Concord as the state's second capital after Boston. During World War II Portsmouth played a major role in supplying munitions and war materials to both England and Japan. Today Portsmouth is home to several shopping malls including one located within walking distance of its downtown core complete with a movie theater, multiplex theater, bank branches and restaurants. The history of Portsmouth goes back quite some time; it has been mentioned in records dating back to 1000 BC! The area that now makes up Portsmouth was originally inhabited by Algonquin people who were hunting deer near present-day Manchester. Over time these people slowly migrated westward until they reached what is now known asFranklin County on October 15th 1620 AD when they set up camp along what is today's Route 1A highway outside present-day Portsmouth.(Kirby). After living there for awhile they decided that this location wasn't suits their needs so they moved on down river towards modern day Lebanon (Barton). Eventually they met another group of settlers who had also come fromNH(Fletcher)and agreed upon a merger which resulted inthe formationofPortsmouth Colony on February 7th 1635.(Lambert). This colony consisted of about twenty families (based upon earlier groups totaling seventy four persons) with hopes of establishing themselves permanently inNH.(Fletcher). Unfortunately things didn't go according to plan as early hostilities began between natives and European newcomers.(Danielson/Healy)). By mid season most members had either returned home or left for better opportunities elsewhere(Fletcher). Continued conflict led some colonists into hiding while others managedTo keep holdoftheir belongings(Walsh)(Hutchinson/Anderson). As relations improved over time many found new homes within NH(Smithers)(Healy)) However little can be done about disputes that may occur during peacetime(Curtis/Shepard). In 1722 Captain John Smith sailed intoNH bound forCanada with his ship " Arabella" carrying three hundred men & women under leadership including George Rogers (founder), William Denny (Captain), Dr Samuel Johnson (surgeon) & Mrs Ann Putnam (wife)) They arrived at what is now Halifax Nova Scotia on November 10th 1722 after leaving Boston on October 25th.(Smith/Galloway)). Upon landing they erected tents among103 other families which would remain their encampment until winter break arrived six weeks later when they filed out onto Long Island Sound wherethey built another encampment using driftwood available offshore((Reeves)).After spending two winters exploring northern New England he reported backdated January 4th 1723 commenting:"It appeared very necessary we should establish ourselves here before any attempt could be made being made by those Enemies [the French]to reach us through your Province". On March 2nd he recommended:"That all Persons concerned therein should immediately repair hither unto me together...I need no more witnesses than you will have sufficient reflection how highly I esteem your virtues etc." So much for planning things..............Although nothing came from Smith's recommendations he did send someone - Colonel John Montresor - solo acrossNewfoundland Bay Bridge February 3rd 1725 aboard HMS Enterprise ostensibly seeking trade opportunities with Aboriginal people living along Prince Edward Island((Smythe)), although this action may have also been prompted by British concerns about French intentions((Eaton)). According to historian David Kirsch: "Montresor seems not only an explorer but also something more than just Venturesome Adventurer; his presence underscores British suspicions that France might try passage through our territory without conferring any concessions." Although nothing comes from this letter authority suggests he actually went anywhere ((Hutchinson/Anderson)))) On July 3rd 1728 Admiral James Cook sailed past Portland Head lighthouse bearing news that unknown land lay beyond Cape Horn ((Cook)).
