On November 12th, 1847 James Fenton resigned his office as Mayoralty Judge for unknown reasons and so no vote took place to fill his seat; however he had been appointed Mayoralty Judge four days earlier on October 25th and effective from then until his resignation effective November 12th he served concurrently as Mayoralty Judge for both townships together with Justice Samuel Cranch during council meetings held at different locations throughout town between October 25th and December 6th inclusive The first school opened in what is now downtown Portsmouth on September 14th, 1840 along with Dover Academy which operated out of that building until 1861 when it moved into its current location across the harbor from HMS Constitution Museum until 1984 when it closed down because of lack of students On February 9th, 1851 a fire destroyed much of downtown business including stores (the Mechanic store being one among them) It wasn't until 1865 - seventy five years after statehood - when Dartmouth College started offering classes here The post office located at 4 Main Street from 1868 through 1893 mailed packages only In 1916 two churches were built: First Presbyterian Church (nowomination remains undetermined) which replaced an existing wooden frame building dating back to 1800s Poor House also constructed around same time Protestant Episcopal church constructed by Mrs Ethel Ladda This church also remain standing today though conversion has resulted into multiple buildings including several single story dwellings attached thereon It should be noted that neitherchurch ever housed any services inside their own property despite claims otherwise Second Presbyterian Church built about 1920 following original plans by Reverend H S Pratt Arlington Avenue ★ ☆ ☆ ☆
