The population was estimated to be around 9,500 in the 2010 census, making Nashua one of the most populous towns in the state. Nashua is located north of Manchester on the banks of the Nashua River. The river forms part of the border between Nashua and Dummer County. The first people to live in what is now Nashua were Native Americans who arrived from Connecticut about 1620. In 1768, Captain John Montresor and his men founded what is now called Montresor's Ferry across the river from present-day Nashua. Nathaniel Dowell later built a gristmill on opposite sides ofriver near present-day Union Hill. In 1812, farmers began to settle in this area and named it after General James Sullivan (1753-1825). General Sullivan helped lead American forces during the War for Independence and was considered one of America's greatest generals. In 1814, Nathanial Dowell married Ann Putnam and founded what is now known as Dowell's Mills Manufacturing Company which manufactured flour, breads, noodles and other items. Today there are more than 25 businesses in Nashua that use local ingredients to produce their products. In 1849, John Sargent moved his family from Worcester County Massachusetts to this area and started trading goods with Indians on Main Street in downtown Nashua today. As part of New Hampshire's efforts to become more engaged with digital culture, Nashua has also seen recent successes including becoming one of only two towns in New England to adopt an e-mail service (the other being Portsmouth).
