The city was founded by men who were searching for a new place to live after leaving Massachusetts. They started a farm and named it Nashua because of its fertile soil. The town slowly grew and became an important center in central New England. In 1872, Nashua incorporated as a city and began to develop as an agricultural town. One of the first things that the city did was begin developing a police department. One of the officers on the force at that time was John Youngblood. He had previously worked in Boston and was very impressed with how well-developed theirPolice Department there was. By 1907, Nashua had developed into one of the most significant cities in central New England. In 1925, Mayor John Larkin appointed George Witherspoon as director of public works within Nashua's government structure which would later become known as City Hall. During his time at City Hall, Witherspoon helped develop many aspects of Nashua's infrastructure such as sewer systems, roads, water systems, schools and more.Throughout his career at City Hall, Witherspoon made sure that Nashua received excellent services from its government officials which helped make it one of the most successful cities in central New England during that time period

In 1857, Nashua became a city and has since grown to become one of New Hampshire's largest cities.
