The first settler in Nashua was Samuel Morse who arrived with his family in 1620 and built Morse House on Meeting Street. Morse Street still bears his name today. Many other early settlers followed suit and founded homes throughout what would become Nashua including: James Paine (1639–1707), Nathaniel Bradstreet (1640–1714), John Denison (1646–1725), Abraham Parsons (1650–1728), Simon Belcher (1660– 1727), Thomas Glover (1662–1821) and others. By 1853, there were over 100 families living in Nashua when it split from Portsmouth due to increased population growth following the discovery of gold near Fort Donelson on Lake Ontario during the Dakota War of 1851-1852! On July 1st, 1853, Nashua became a town when it merged with neighboring towns Portsmouth and Hampton Roads under one common government structure which lasted until 1912 when it fractured into separate cities again! Today,NH constitutional law dictates that only incorporated municipalities may call themselves towns!
