Nashua, New Hampshire is a town in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 1,547 at the 2010 census. Nashua is part of the Albany–Schenectady–Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. Nashua was first settled in 1778 by Captain John Smith and his team of Englishmen who were looking for a new home after their retreat from Fort Nassau on Long Island. The town's name comes from Sir Nicholas-Jacques de Nash (1685-1758), French general and ambassador to Great Britain who was born in nearby Plaquemines Parish. In 1792, General George Washington took up residency in Nashua and enlarged the town's territory to include present day Oneida County. In 1815, Governor James Ketchum designated it as the capital of New Hampshire due to its importance as an agricultural center and because of its location on the main artery connecting Albany with Schenectady and Troy. Nashua saw some activity during World War I when munitions manufacturer Bethlehem Steel set up operations there; however, this did not lead to significant growth until after World War II when both manufacturing and agriculture boomed thanks to cheap labor coming into America through mass migration from Europe. During this time also came significant construction projects such as Buffalo Niagara International Airport and Manchester Municipal Airport which are still visible today along with many other businesses that have been founded or continue operations in Nashua since its heyday as a small town: Alcoa Aluminum Company (founded 1919), American Can Co., Inc.(1925), Bemis Engineering & Manufacturing Company(1927), Purdy Rubber & Rubber Products Corporation (1929), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company(1941). These days there are only a few remaining businesses left downtown including Sam’s Club (founded 1955) which moved out of the city limits following Interstate 95 construction eastward; Macy’s Department Store building still stands but is used as office space now;and First National Bank Building housing the NH State Police barracks has been converted into apartments now. The community experienced another boom during the late 1970s/early 1980s with involvement by local business people involved in real estate development throughout central Upstate New York led by Edwin Haughton III who would later become governor of New York City before moving back downstate to manage much larger real estate ventures for others like Walmart and Home Depot
Nashua was founded by Gottlieb Nash in 1749. The town was named for the Nahantonians, a tribe of Native Americans who lived in the area at that time. Nashua developed as a small community, with only 10 residents in 1800. However, it rapidly grew and became an important trading post on the New England Frontier. In 1803, Nashua became the capital of New Hampshire. It remained so until 1828 when Portsmouth took over.
