Nashua, New Hampshire is a town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 9,851 at the 2010 census. Nashua is the county seat of Hillsborough County. Nashua is part of the Portsmouth– Restore NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The townsite that now makes up the town of Nashua was laid out by Captain Nathaniel Greene in 1736 as part of a larger land grant to Sir Edmund Andros. In 1800, Nathan Beebe purchased 640 acres (250 km²) in what is now Nashua from Sir Edmund Andros for $4,000 and named it Beebe's Hill after himself and his father-in-law Major General Ebenezer Beebe. The name Nashua derived from an Indian word meaning "the place where wild onions grow". The first settler in what would become Nashua was Ephraim Putnam on April 12, 1768. By 1772 there were twenty settlers living in or near present day Nashua; eleven men and ten women. On October 16 of that year, Putnam and his wife were married at Congaree Pond by Reverend John Saunders.. In 1802, Colonel Amos Stoddard erected a sawmill on the river below Congaree Pond which became one of the leading mills in this region. In 1807 Daniel Webster bought 125 acres (50 km²) adjacent to Congaree Pond from Colonel Amos Stoddard for $5 per acre ($226 per hectare). This land later became known as Webster's Valley because it lay between the rivers Great Salt Lake and Connecticut River (). In 1812 Samuel Adams moved his family to present day Nashua from Manchester Township in Windham County; they had been living in an log cabin located about northeast of present day Norwich (). Adams built a frame house on State Road 7 about southwest of modern day Norwich () which he called Northampton House (). He also started trading with Native Americans hereabouts through trade goods such as beads, arrows and tobacco products.. After American independence was declared on July 4th, 1776 by George Washington than all towns within GW's borders were placed under military control with Commander Nathanael Greene assuming command over all militiamen quartered throughout New England.. Greene ordered local citizens not to celebrate Independence Day but instead take steps towards civilization including planting trees and building houses... After several months' absence on July 14th Nathanael Greene returned to find only three homes standing (), most likely due to lack of food supplies brought over aboard HMS Pembroke during its passage through Halifax Harbour laden with munitions destined for Boston Harbor... On August 3rd Nathanael Greene issued Order No. 2 giving all male residents between 16 years old and 60 years old permission to purchase one vote at Town Meeting thereby establishing personal representation at town level... After some more time spent examining plans for constructing such a meetinghouse ground location could not be determined until November 5th when Seth Wenham arrived accompanied by Silas Deane who had volunteered his services as surveyor... A committee consisting of Captains Nicholas Cooley (Governor), Nathaniel Beebe (General Manager), Silas Deane (Surveyor), Seth Wenham (Agent) met January 8th 1778 at Northampton House() where they decided upon site for future construction northwest thereof across what is now First Street from Meetinghouse Lane () westward along South Green Street () eastward bisectingpresent day Main Street (); additionally Site located near present day Providence Avenue southwesterly corneringpresentday Spring Streets())… The new meetinghouse was completed March 22nd 1779 just northofthe originalOne half block westof Main Street(). It seated 400 people inside and 100 people outside followingAmendments madeto Order No.2’s provisions concerning exterior seating Capacity increasingfrom 100to 200 persons when additional rooms/yards are added subsequentTo date OriginalHouse hath remained unaltered exceptfor minor repairsand alterations madeduring its llllllllll history….
