Nashua, New Hampshire is home to a rich Ammunition history that dates back to 1792. The city was founded by General George Washington and was named in his honor. Nashua’s first gunsmith, Nicholas-Jacques Conte, manufactured cannons for the American Revolution. In 1814, the town became the site of the Battle of Bunker Hill, which helped start the American Civil War. After the war ended in 1865, Nashua grew rapidly as a center for ammunition production. Today, Nashua is known for its production of small arms ammunition and components used in firearms and other items such as vehicles. The early Ammunition industry in Nashua was centered around two businesses: Nicholas-Jacques Conte & Sons Arsenal and John Fitch & Son Foundry. These businesses produced cannonballs (shot), rifle rounds (bullets) and shell casings for shotguns and pistols. Rifle rounds were also made with explosive warheads that could be detonated by trigger pulls or firings from long guns. By 1814 most of this Ammo had been exported to England where it was used in both wars there between 1812-1815 and afterwards until 1830 when new cartridges were invented that led to an arms race with Russia In 1827 Nicholas-Jacques Conte retired after over 50 years of manufacturing Ammunition at his shop on Depot Street near High Street. His son Laurent took up manufacture but things went downhill quickly due to competition from British manufacturers who were able to produce better quality shells at lower costs than their French counterparts In 1840 John Fitch came into business making shotgun rounds while also developing a new type of cartridge called “Percussion Round” which would later become known as .50 BMG round . In 1850 he started producing rifle rounds using a new technology called “Cannonball Rounds” which resulted in huge profits for him In 1861 John Fitch moved his factory downriver from Manchester so he could larger premises on Market Square which allowed him to produce even more high powered rifles including rifles capable of firing projectiles up to 100 yards By 1870 all Manufacturing had stopped except for some Arms Repair shops located around town where Firearmsmiths still repairedguns
