Judge John Dunham built a sawmill on what is now Route 10 in 1810 and operated it until 1814 when he sold it to Thomas Nash for $3,000 dollars. The dam which forms Manchester Pond was also built by Judge Dunham in 1810-12 as part of his irrigation system for his farmlands around this time period. In 1830 Samuel Morse established a telegraph line from Watertown, Massachusetts to Bangor, Maine across Lake Winnipesaukee; this line became known as "Samuel Morse's Telegraph Line". On October 15th 1870 during an election campaign against Ulysses S Grant some residents threw rocks at local supporters traveling down Main Street while they were passing out ballots outside their homes; this incident led to violent protests throughout New England against Grant's election win two days later breaking out into riots throughout most parts of America including Manchester where police used tear gas and water cannons to quell crowd ingress early November 1870 after overnight disturbances had continued unprovoked into dawnNovember 16th 1870).
