The town was founded on November 3, 1788 by Loyalist refugees from Rhode Island who had fled during the American Revolution. On July 4th, 1801, Manchester became part of Massachusetts as a result of the Adams-Onion Treaty. In 1851, it became a part of New Hampshire. The first store in Manchester was built on what is now Meeting Street in 1827 and it was until 1840 that there were no schools in or around town (except for an academy operated by Congregationalists). In 1842, Bostonian businessman Albert Parsons invested $5200 into building what would become one of America's first Tiffany glass factories. The factory produced glassware for many famous Americans such as Benjamin Franklin and Alexander Hamilton. In 1860s Manchester began to grow rapidly with its new industry – textile manufacture – andrew Mellon bought almost all of the patents associated with this industry so that textiles could be made without infringing on other companies' patents. This led to Bethlehem Steel being spun off from Andrew Mellon's company two years later when heavy metal production became more important than lace making at this time and Bethlehem Steel went public as a steel manufacturer rather than just a clothier/textile producer like Andrew Mellon had wanted them to do
