Manchester, New Hampshire is a town in Franklin County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Manchester is the county seat of Franklin County. The name Manchester comes from the Englishman John Manx who settled there in 1736 and named it after himself. Manchester's first settlement was on an island in what is now Palmer Lake. In 1749, another man by the name of Addison purchased land on what is now Main Street and built a sawmill that continued to be operational until 1814. The town was chartered on July 24, 1786 by Daniel Webster as part of his "Townshend Plan." On December 12, 1800, the day after General George Washington's inauguration as President of the United States, Manchester became one of thirteen towns in New Hampshire designated as part of the First District under Territorial Governor Nathaniel Gorham. In 1801, when New Hampshire became a state, Manchester became its second county seat and remained so until 1959 when Portsmouth took over that role. In 1898 James Wulfstad purchased 1/4 acre (0.17 km2) east of downtown for $1 and began to build a home which would become known as Wulfstad Manor; this property remains today as part of downtown Manchester's core business district with several blocks bordered by State Street to the north-west and Exchange Avenue to the south-east). On November 5th 1904 Union Carbide manufactured their largest plant outside North America at what is now called West Park Place near where Interstate 95 meets Interstate 84; this plant would later produce plutonium for Hiroshima atomic bomb testing starting in 1945; however much less plutonium than originally planned due to World War II production quotas set by US president Harry Truman The Great Depression caused many businesses closed down in those days including Union Carbide but it reopened within two years thanks to government largesse which included workmen's compensation insurance for employees being laid off due to recessionary times This led also to Manchester becoming one of few places where brand new automobiles were imported during this time When Interstate 95 was extended into NH from VT via I-84 circa 1990s some developers decided they should build an interstate interchange right next door instead of building anything else because they thought people would move away if there wasn't one Nowadays many people still live close enough together that they can visit each other regularly even if they don't live within walking or biking distance
