Trumbull and his party were looking for a new site to settle after their escape from British captivity during the American Revolution. They found a swampy piece of land in what is now downtown Manchester and named it "Putnam's Swamp." In 1726 Captain Nathaniel Parker bought the swamp from Captain Trumbull for £10 sterling. On September 22, 1727, Norwich resident George White donated land to Manchester for a church and graveyard which he had also purchased from Captain Trumbull just four miles away. The first Methodist Church was built in 1811 on property donated by Drury Custis (1768–1839), an American Revolutionary War veteran who served as commander of Portsmouth’s militia regiment while stationed at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard early in the war. Presbyterian services were first offered at Trinity Episcopal Church on Main Street in downtown Manchester on October 16, 1812 by Revd James Aiken (1775–1847). Reverend Aiken organized services there until 1830 when he moved to Lebanon Congregational Church where he served as pastor until his death in 1851; his remains are interred there today among those of his predecessor Revd Amos Kendall (1779–1853). Manchester experienced its earliest growth as a commercial center due to its location on navigable waters east of Boston and its favorable access to shipping lanes through which goods could be transported across the Atlantic Ocean. By 1800,Manchester had become one of New England's leading textile centers with mills manufacturing everything from cotton toweling products to shoe leathers and hats. Over time other businesses have entered into Manchester's economic fabric including agricultural holdings such as Jardin Farms dating back to 1786; General Mills operations began production at what is now called Millstone Landing near present day Derby line Road in 1898; Wells Fargo Bank constructed an eight story building adjacent to First Baptist Church along Derby Line Road between 1916 and 1917; auto parts manufacturer Goodyear opened its factory overlooking downtownManchester beginning production there in 1928; local miller Waddell conducted business upriver at Hammond’s Mill until 1938 when he closed down for lack of competition.;during World War II many factories were turned over to government contractors such as Ford Motor Company’s Hanover Plant producing munitions ; Although downtownManchester was destroyed bybombing during World War II most major activity continued upstairs with several large companies continuing operations despite damage even after hostilities ended In 1951 Bethlehem Steel Corporation acquired majority ownership interestsin Goodyear Corporation providing employment opportunities for thousands throughout northeastern New England through steel production In 1984 local paper company The Republican merged with parent company Hearst Corporation becoming Hearst Newspapers Incorporated leaving DowntownManchester essentially abandoned although some small businesses continue operation DowntownManchester has seen occasional redevelopment efforts but generally remains vacant or abandoned since 1984 when Hearst Newspapers left town . There have been attempts howeverto bring life back into downtownmanchester with various concepts including having artists create artwork or concerts occurring inside or outsideof buildings . Despite these efforts however numerous factors like deteriorated infrastructure, low tourist traffic rate ,and citywide poverty have kept DowntownManchester largely uninhabitable since 1985
