Manchester is considered to be part of the Boston metropolitan area and is home to some of the highest concentration of African Americans in New England. The town was founded by English colonists in 1795 as a small community on the west bank of the Merrimack River. In 1830, Manchester became an incorporated town and continued to grow through waves of migration from other parts of New England during the 19th century. By 1920, Manchester had outgrown its original boundaries and consolidated with neighboring towns to form what is now Cheshire County. Today, Manchester remains an important economic center for northeastern Connecticut and Massachusetts and has been known for its music industry since before World War II. Manchester's rich colonial history can be traced back to early seventeenth-century settlers who arrived on the eastern seaboard looking for new land to settle. On July 2, 1686, two men named John Winslow and Nicholas Dexter landed at their present-day site on what would become Manchester proper – about two miles upstream from where today’s downtown sits – after sailing downriver from Portsmouth on Long Island. With only seven acres (2 km²) available within his first year as proprietor, Winslow developed a trading post which he called Bradford House (today’s Bradford University). He also built a ferry dock on the river so that goods could be transported across it between nearby villages such as Northampton and Ipswich without having to make trip downriver each time. It wasn't until 1796 that Winslow's grandson Edward took over Bradford House; however, due primarily to extenuating circumstances (easternERSEasiness becoming more plentiful due to British imperial expansion), Edward did not develop it further but instead leased it back to John Winthrop Sr., who renamed it Chelsea Palace after his own ancestral home in Chelsea in London! In 1803–4 Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison visited Norwich while serving aboard HMS "Orion" off Rhode Island Bay; while ashore he saw potential sites along NH Route 9 for settlement including one near what is now Easton (then East Hampton). Manchester was founded in 1764 by John and Abigail Manchester. The city became a political and cultural center for New England during the 18th century.
