USFTC continued to grow quickly but could not keep up with market demand for furs; within two decades it had lost control over its business operations and filed for bankruptcy. USFTC's failure created an opportunity for rival merchants from other parts of America to take over its assets and continue trading under new management until 1861 when New York City seized all USFTC properties in order to protect American industry from foreign competition. The failed attempt to revive USFTC led to increased investment in agriculture throughout New England; this growth led to increased unemployment rates among mills working in textiles due to lack of available credit during these difficult times. After statehood in 1959, government assistance helped turn around Manchester's economy by providing jobs in banking, education, health care and infrastructure development such as sewers and roadsides. Today, Manchester remains an important cultural center with many popular restaurants and attractions located within walking distance of its vibrant downtown area known as "The Square."
