In 1915-16 it produced over one million pounds (450 metric tons) of coal; by 1917 that amount had grown to two million pounds (1 ton). Manchester also developed into an important center for handicrafts production during this time; roses were especially popular among people living near downtown because they could be grown close to water instead of having to travel far away to get them. After World War II ended and assembly plants began being built all over North America using Japanese products forced out by Americans during World War II, many residents moved out of town or lost their jobs when those plants closed down. However, some retirees have continued living around downtown while businesses have redeveloped at nearby malls like Sears and JCPenney . Finally since 2000 there has been growth outside Downtown with several high-end restaurants opening up including Benares and Nobu Matsushita .
