In 1864, General Robert E Lee ordered his unit,the 1st Virginia Infantry to adopt a new rifle called the “AR” (Armored Rifle). This weapon featured a revolving barrel that gave it an advantage over traditional firearms like pistols as it could take more rounds per minute to kill an opponent than a handgun could. In 1868, Colonel James Fenton submitted plans for what would become the Allin Arms Company’s Model 1871 Army Carbine with a newly invented magazine system that allowed infantrymen to reload their weapons without having to leave their positions. However, these plans were never implemented into production because of cost overruns and difficulties with fabricating reliable enough components within time constraints within American factories at that point in its history (see: History of ArmaLite rifle). However, during World War I both Holland & Barrett Firearms Manufacturing Co., Ltd., licensee of Allin Arms Company’s patents (including those on magazine systems) produced significant numbers of carbines under license from various European manufacturers under contract with British forces fighting on both sides of World War I (e.g.: H&B Model 1914 Belgian/British Carbine; H&B Type VII French/American Carbine; H&B Mk XIV Russian/Italian Carbine). These carbines were known as " wartime models". That said however some versions were exported commercially including: Browning Automatic Rifle model BT–9A; Colt Model 1911 semiautomatic pistol; FN Herstal LMG type 1 assault rifle chambered for 7·65x39mm Parabellum round; Remington Model 870 pump action shotgun; Ruger Standard 10/22 sporting gun

In 1865, America acquired more land within present-day Lebanon when it purchasedadditional parcels from France for $6 million dollars including Mount Carmel and parts of Beirut today’s Old City (the current capital). In 1949, after World War II ended, Lebanese refugees returned home to their homes within present-day Lebanon or departed for other parts of the world specifically due to political instability following Mandatory Palestine’s annexation by Israel under British rule during World War II. Today there are an estimated 1.5 million Lebanese nationals living abroad with an additional 350 thousand refugees who have also fledto various parts of the world since 1948 according to UNHCR figures
