In 1775, the town of Laconia was established on what is now theeast side of NH. It was named for Captain Jonathan Lacon who fought in the French and Indian War. Laconia became a thriving small town with a population of around 350 in 1800. By 1820, it had increased to 1,000 people and by 1830, it had reached 2,000 people. The town's growth was due in part to its location on Route 9 which led to a high demand for goods from surrounding towns and villages. In 1845, Laconia passed an ordinance establishing Sunday school as an important part of its community life. This helped to keep children out of mischief on Saturday nights and helped to promote religion in the face of religious persecution during the American Civil War.
