Laconia (New Hampshire) is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. Laconia is located on the eastern border of NH and Vermont. It is bordered by Goffstown to the north, Manchester to the east, Bedford to the south, and Lebanon to the west. The area now comprising Laconia was first settled in 1768 by two brothers named John and Israel Copley who bought land from George Washington for $1 per acre. They built a log cabin and started a small farm. The name “Laconia” was given because of its location on high ground between what are now Goffstown, Manchester, Bedford and Lebanon townships on the Connecticut River valley. The first post office opened in 1827 and was called “Goffstown” after Colonel James Goff who had served in General Anthony Wayne's brigade during the War of 1812. In 1859, Laconia became part of Madison County when it was organized from parts of Union County. The courthouse burned down in 1863 while being moved from one location to another within town limits; it reopened under new management in 1865 but closed again due to financial difficulties three years later). A new courthouse was built on State Street in 1915 which remains standing today as one of NH's most distinctive landmarks.
