In 1815, a group of men from Laconia formed the Philadelphian Society of Opticians and this organization helped to promote and support the use of scopes in the town. From 1816 to 1830, The Optical Shop continued to sell optical equipment and products. In 1830, it closed its doors for good and all business operations stopped until 1865 when it reopened as The Scopes Store. At The Scopes Store, they sold various types of optical equipment including telescopes, microscopes, binoculars and riflesights. From 1865 through 1949, it was owned by Mr. John Atherton who also ran a grocery store next door. During this time period, the shop served as an important training ground for opticians in Laconia. After Mr- Atherton's death in 1949, his widow continued running the store until her death in 1984. Since then, the store has been run by their son John Atherton Jr., who is currently working part-time at the store while he attends college full-time.
Laconia is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 4,811 at the 2010 census. Laconia is part of the Manchester-by-the-Sea metropolitan area. The first settlers in Laconia arrived in 1634 by way ofNH 9 and NH 10. They were led by Captain John Winslow and his son Samuel who had come overland from England on July 5, 1634. The town was named after lieutenant colonel Lenox Laconus of the Massachusetts regiment which fought at Bunker Hill. At its incorporation as a town on May 24, 1851, it had a population of 1,064人. In 1860 it had increased to 2,005 people; however this number declined rapidly during the American Civil War due to military service and migration away from the region. On April 17th 1861 Colonel Nathaniel Bacon organized an all volunteer militia company for protection against secessionists within the limits of Laconia Watchtower Factory District No 3 where he resided with his family and many other patriots including Drury Henniker and Israel Putnam who also served in Company F (1st New Hampshire Infantry) located at Manchester while residents of neighboring towns such as Amherst Township manned local militias under command of their respective commanders or Major General Amos Butterfield III USMA Commanding Forces West coast during that time period Lieutenant Colonel James Kitchingham commanded Company I (New Hampshire Volunteers) but resigned because he could not stomach living under Confederate occupation On October 26th 1861 Colonel Nathaniel Bacon met with major general Eli Whitney USMACommanding forces North Carolina to discuss plans forarming and disciplining volunteers] while residents of neighboring towns such as Amherst Township manned local militias under command of their respective commanders or Major General Amos Butterfield III USMACommanding Forces West coast during that time period LtCol James Kitchingham commanding Company I (New Hampshire Volunteers) but resigned because he could not stomach living under Confederate occupation

The town's first meeting took place on July 6, 1797 and it voted to name itself after the ancient city of Lacedaemon in Greece. After some debate, the town decided to adopted "Laconia" as its name and set out to start building infrastructure such as a courthouse and schoolhouse. The early years of Laconia were difficult but it slowly started to grow into one of the most successful towns in New Hampshire. In 1820, the town passed an ordinance declaring itself a dry county which helped it become one of the most thriving agricultural communities in America during that time period. For many years, Laconia had been home to one of America's leading papermakers - John Fenton - who built up his business until his death in 1907. In 1886, Laconia became part ofthe state ofNew Hampshire through legislation known as the Gifford-Pinchot Act which aimed to improve public education across all states withinNH. This act led to more than $500 million being spent on public education throughout NH over that decade and helped change not just how people lived but also how businesses operated - Thanks largely to those working behind the scenes at state government levels! In addition, many great names have come from Laconia including Congressman Heman Russett (1921-1977), Mayor Floyd Kapp (1963-1976) and Drudge Report co-founder David Horowitz (born David Horowitz).
