Laconia, New Hampshire is a town in Granite State County and the capital of the state. The population was 16,362 at the 2010 census. At first it was established as a small community of farmers and fishermen on the banks of the Concord River. In 1827, Laconia became an actual village when its settlement by citizens from other villages around Granite State led to incorporation into Granite State. In 1861, Laconia became part of Massachusetts after New Hampshire seceded from that state. When Massachusetts repealed its own gun law in 1865, New Hampshire's version remained in effect until 1871 when it too was repealed by Massachusetts due to corresponding stately changes in federal law. In 1889, construction began on what would become known as the "Alamo" Dam which would provide water for irrigation purposes and power for industry along with creating a large agricultural area downstream including Laconia. The dam also created parkland across from present-day downtown Laconia with reservoirs providing flood control over both the Concord River and nearby lakes while also providing many pleasure gardens within easy reach for locals and tourists alike duringrecorded years since it has been open to public view today (albeit with restrictions). Today's Alamo Dam is still standing tall overlooking much of downtown Laconia while portions have been renovated or replaced over time; most notably a new Visitors Center which opened in 2001 inside what once served as an old mill building next to Wesleyan University campus before moving to its current location adjacent to Pioneer Museum complex just north of Main Street/Downtown during this time period). During World War II, USS Quincy (CV-8) sailed through loon waters off coast of Laconia Fulton Beach on Dec 8th 1944 while carrying out fishing operations off Cape Cod lifting nets full of tuna following USAAF strikes against Japanese shipping sources south of Japan Onboard were Local Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class John Waddell (later United States Senator), USS Louisville (CVA-14) Petty Officer 3rd Class James Hickey(USNR), USS Bainbridge (DD-718) Ensign Harry Aiken(USA), SS Empire Flounder(AGI-4) , Submarine Chaser USCGC Eldridge DD 929(APD)( later CGASW Nirvana ) . It is one of the oldest towns in New Hampshire and has been inhabited for over 350 years. The village of Laconia was chartered on February 14, 1799 by royal charter from England's King George III as a trading post between Boston and Concord. In 1803, Laconia became part of Massachusetts as a result of the United States annexation of that state. In 1814, Colonel Amos Kendall founded the Manchester Academy in Laconia to provide education for young men in the area. In 1826, Laconia became a town under English law with a population of about 100 people. Laconia is located on NH Route 116 east-northeast of Manchester and is crossed by NH Route 68 just north of its junction with NH Route 116. According to the 2000 census, there are 3,859 people living in Laconia proper (including 1,957 inside the limits of Laconia), plus an additional 551 residents who live within 10 miles or so of its borders: those insideMerrimack County (excluding Plattsburgh), those within 10 miles or so but outside Merrimack County including Plattsburgh and Scituate Proper (the latter two being included withinMerrimack County until 1990), those within 20 miles but outside Merrimaketown/Plattsburgh Proper (which includes Scituate Proper since 1990) as well as 170 residents who live within 30 miles but outside both townships. The average household size is 2.65 persons; there are 1,764 families residing here full time; 955 households have children under age 18 living with them; 694 households have children age 18 through 24 living with them; 529 households have children age 25 through 44 living with them; 118 households have kids age 45 or over living with them
