Laconia (population: 24) is a town in Hampshire County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 710 at the 2010 census. Laconia is the only community in New Hampshire with a ZIP code of 03837. The first permanent settler in what would become Laconia was Elijah Pritchard, who arrived in 1768 from Connecticut. He named his new settlement after his native country, Greece; however, no evidence exists that any Greek immigrants actually lived or worked here. In 1802 Elias Griggs bought land from Pritchard and began to build a house on what is now Main Street. Griggs' wife – also named Elena – served as the town's first treasurer and clerk since they were both illiterate. They also built an addition to the original house which still stands today on North Main Street. In 1808-09 Ezra Stiles erected a small log cabin near where present day Union Bridge Road crosses the Nashua River just east of Laconia village center. This cabin was used as a store and post office until it burned down in 1892; however, sometraceable evidence suggests that Ezra may have been responsible for building what became Laconia's first schoolhouse back then too). A more recent structure located off of Union Bridge Road across from First Baptist Church helped serve as the town's first library starting in 1903 but burned down in 1978; however, efforts are currently underway to rehabilitate and reopen this building as part of town history programming See Also: The Laconia School District
