The area that would become Laconia was originally settled by farmers and their families in 1795 as part of present-day Manchester Township. In 1838, a group of English settlers named Canterbury bought an acreage lying east of what is now Main Street for $1 per acre. They laid out a town on this land, which they called "Canterbury". The name was changed to Laconia in 1903 when it became part of Manchester Township. Laconia has had its share of sorrows and joys during its history, but it has also been home to many famous people including James Fenton who served as mayor from 1951 until his death in 1978; Nellie Bly who wrote her first book, "The Great Gatsby" here; and Gov. John Sununu who was born here in 1944 and won election as a U.S. Senator from New Hampshire in 2010. Today, Laconia is still enjoying some aspects of its early days such as its wide variety of shops including several butcheries and bakeries along with several grocery stores, two movie theaters (one inside the original courthouse), four restaurants/bars, one post office (closed 2005), two churches (Anglican and Lutheran), three schools (grades K-12) - one Day Care Center for children ages 3-6 years old as well as six adult locker rooms/bathing machines - all operated by local businesses or government entities such as school districts or health departments. There are also tennis courts and a few golf courses within walking distance for residents and visitors alike!

Laconia, New Hampshire is a town in Cumberland County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Laconia was founded in 1798 by Loyalist refugees from Rhode Island. It became a town in 1802 and a city in 1912. The center of the town is known as its "ring" or "town square". The first settler in Laconia was John Goodridge and his wife Hannah Goodridge. They arrived on July 10, 1798 from Providence, Rhode Island. The Goodridges were among the first white settlers in what would become Cumberland County. John Goodridge's brother-in-law David Holmes also arrived early in 1800 and began to clear land near present day Laconia Square. By 1801 there were eight families living in Laconia: five goodhorns (good people), one blacksmith, two farmers, one miller and one shoemaker/dyer. In 1802 the city of Lowell was founded nearby byavers who had come overland from Boston along the Merrimack River Valley route that would later be called Route 128
Laconia was founded by white settlers in 1771. It became a town in 1841. The men of Laconia were instrumental in the founding of the United States.
