Laconia is located at 41°5′25″N 0°14′10″W and has an elevation of 410 feet (150 m). The population of Laconia was 3,890 as of the 2010 census. It is also home to Dartmouth College and Hampshire College. The first settler in what is now Laconia was Captain David Thompson, who arrived in 1777 from England with his family. He built a log cabin on the bank of the Nashua River and named it Fort David. The fort served as a trading post until it closed in 1803 because of increased hostility between Great Britain and America over the issues of taxation rates and trade regulations. Captain David Thompson's son, Nathaniel, reopened Fort Davidson in 1805 after he acquired title to land along the river where Fort David had been located. Nathaniel renamed his new settlement Laconia after his father's old fortification designation, which he thought would be more easily remembered by traders traveling through his territory. In 1813-14, Colonel George Lathrop led an expedition against Acadian settlers living near present-day Lebanon Valley on what are now Swift Current Lake and Bear Mountain Reservoirs east of downtown Laconia. After driving off these colonists with heavy losses, Colonel Lathrop renamed their new settlement "Laphonia" after himself for its intended strategic value as a route linking New England with Canada via Georgian Bay - then part of Quebec - rather than passing through Boston Harbor like other colonists were doing at that time. This naming convention continued until 1830 when Massachusetts General Josiah Quincy renamed all Canadian settlements east of Quebec City "New Brunswick". This change reflected Jamestown's policy that any new English settlements within colonial boundaries were to be named according to their original English namesakes - e.g., Halifax instead of Jamestown Ferry Landing because Halifax represented Nova Scotia whileJamestown Ferry Landing represented Prince Edward Island; Truro insteadof Moncton because Moncton represented everything except Acadie; Bathurst insteadof Trois Rivieres because Bathurst represented not just New Brunswick but also parts of Maine; etc.). Newark replaced Trenton due to its location across from Kingston Upon Thames on Long Point Peninsula adjacent to King's Bridge across Kingston harbour before becoming part of Toronto during Queen Victoria's reign (1867-1901). During World War I (1914-1918), many munitions dumps were established around eastern North America due to German concerns about Allied naval ambitions offshore: one such dump was at Plattsburgh on Hudson Bay near Winnipeg which became known as Bagshot Harbour after Admiral Arthur Cuthbert Pound commandant there during World War I) .
