Laconia, New Hampshire is a town in Sullivan County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,739 at the 2010 census. Laconia is part of the Manchester–Newton, NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was incorporated on December 12, 1828. It was named for John Lacon (1794-1868), an early settler and member of the New Hampshire Senate. Laconia was settled by farmers who arrived from Maine in 1795 and built log cabins on the banks of the Grand River. By 1820 most of the settlers had moved away to other settlements in central New England because of difficult living conditions and low prices for farmland. However, some residents returned to Laconia over time to maintain connections with their old home and help promote local agriculture and businesses. In 1825 a surveying party surveyed land within present-day Laconia limits and made suggestions for naming the new town after prominent figures in local history or natural sciences; these names were rejected but later changed to include John Lacon as part of a campaign to rename towns in central New England after notable citizens or families. In 1829 John Atherton organized a group of forty men who set out from Bangor, Maine on foot to explore new territory east of Lake Superior. They reached Georgian Bay on November 15th having traveled over thirty miles (48 km) in just two daysest march across open country covered only by their animal skin tents and barefooted while encountering many obstacles including buffalo herds that ran amok near where they were camped overnight; eventually they reached what is now Muskoka Lakeshore before turning back due to lack of food supplies midway through their journey which would have been an important event since it demonstrated that Europeans could travel long distances unsupported without becoming lost or starving – an achievement not possible until much later when first-time travelers learned about maps and trails). On reaching civilization they became known as "The Forty Thieves" because they managed not only to survive but also looted goods carried off by native people during their exploration spree which helped establish European sovereignty over North America coastwise
