Laconia, New Hampshire is a small town located in central New Hampshire. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. The community is named after Laconia, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1811 by three brothers who were loggers and lumberjacks on the White Mountains of New Hampshire. By 1830, Laconia had become an important stop for stagecoaches between Manchester and Boston. In 1836, the first store was built in Laconia and by 1840, there were six stores in the town. The growth of railroad transportation led to an increase in demand for goods brought into Laconia from nearby towns and villages. This increased competition made it difficult for merchants to keep up with demand and prices rose as a result. In 1855, the first post office was opened in Laconia and by 1860 there were twelve post offices in the town. The heavy industry that characterized much of early commercial life stopped during the Great Depression which began in 1929. However, some aspects of this economic decline such as job loss and rising costs continue to be felt today by residents of Laconia who are struggling to make ends meet despite numerous opportunities for economic growth since then including significant investments by both government and business entities throughout its history Today, Laconia is a vibrant community that continues to experience strong cultural influences from its many residents from various parts of New England as well as abroad . Its restaurants offer unique perspectives on regional cuisines while its market offers fresh local produce year-round . Laconia is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Laconia is part of the Manchester-by-the-Sea micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Laconia were two Frenchmen, Pierre Le Moyne and Jean Bourdeau, on July 5, 1703. They built a trading post on the banks of the Merrimack River and named it "Lacona." In 1802, John Greenfield settled in Laconia after traveling through much of New England searching for land grants. He purchased 4 square miles (10 km2) from the Pequot Indians and founded Greenfield Village. In 1807, he sold his holdings to John Morse who had come from Boston as a surveyor for sir Isaac Pitman. Morse built a gristmill on South Main Street in 1810 which remains in operation today as part of the town's history museum. He also founded an academy which became known as Morse College; it now offers undergraduate degrees in business administration, engineering, law and pharmacy. The village plat was filed with the state on November 15, 1812 and approved by Governor Caleb Strong early that year. In 1821, Josiah Quincy organized Laconia into a town charter under which it became one of two towns within Manchester-by-the Sea to have such autonomy over municipal affairs including education and fire protection services; other communities within Manchester were incorporated intoManchester Township only six years later (1829). In 1865 when Manchester Township merged with Durham County to form Newton County, then Newton City during World War II changed its name back to Laconia due to wartime confusion among military units operating throughout New England with their old city names (e.g., Cambridgeport/Concord would have been incorrectly reported as being located in Durham County). On January 1st 1959 Laconia reverted back to its original name once again becoming one of only three towns in Newton County still called "Lacona". The last mayor of Lacona was Edwin Jahnke who served from 1971 until his death in 1988; he was succeeded by his wife Jane Jahnke who continues to serve as Mayor today. Lacona is currently celebrating its 175th anniversary!
