Laconia, New Hampshire is a small town in the town of Manchester, NH. The population was 1,843 at the 2010 census. Laconia is home to Dartmouth College and the University of New Hampshire. It has a rich history dating back to 1768 when Dr. John Tuttle moved here from Portsmouth, NH and began teaching school. In 1853, Laconia became an incorporated town with a meeting house named after Dr. Tuttle's wife, who had died young. The first post office was established in 1857 and was called "Portsmouth". By 1880, there were 10 businesses in Laconia with a total payroll of $3,500 per year. In 1906, the town bought land on which to build their own high school; this would be Laconia High School until it closed in 1977. A new high school was built on the same site and opened in 1978 as Lamont-Doherty High School. In 2006-2007 LHP completed renovations that included installation of new roofs and walls; this also included replacing all interior plaster pieces and repairs to many exterior windowsills and doors throughout the building As one of only two towns in New Hampshire (the other being Concord) without its own police department, LHP contracts with Manchester Police Department for law enforcement services within the town limits (and beyond).
