It was renamed Laconia in 1916 after Lieutenant Colonel John W. Lacy, an officer of the First United States Army during World War I who also served as Mayor of Portsmouth, New Hampshire from 1917 to 1919. During World War II Laconia became one of four towns located along the Houlton Peninsula which supported naval training operations off Maine's coast as part of Allied Forces Europe (AFAE). The first post office in Laconia opened in 1827; it was discontinued operation in 1865. The first store was built on Main Street near present day Meeting House Square around 1830. In 1881, Jno Swayze started operating what is now called "The Smith Store" on Post Road across from the old Congregational Church (now known as First Congregational Church of Christ). This store continued until 1906 when it became home to Mrs. Cook's Bakery and bakery products continued being sold there until 1969 when they moved into their current location on Broadway opposite Main Street across from East High School and today serve as one ofNH’s oldest continuously running small businesses with over 100 years history! In 1907, Mr./Mrs./son/daughter Healey purchased property east of present day Meeting House Square from Jno Swayze for $5 per acre (the original purchase price). They developed this land into what is now known as Healey Park which included a dance hall and tennis courts which were used regularly by locals for dances such as “Tommy’s Hard Times” ballroom dance competitions held every odd year between 1901 and 1911 inclusive; these events often attracted well-heeled visitors from surrounding towns including Portsmouth and Lebanon Valley whose support helped keep Healey Park open past competition conditions that may have otherwise caused its closure or demolition prior to public inspection during those years; many descendants still use this park today! Laconia, New Hampshire is a town in Franklin County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. Laconia is located on the banks of the Great Lakes and is part of the Manchester metropolitan area. The first settlers in Laconia arrived in 1772 by canoe from Canada. In 1829, Laconia became one of the towns in Franklin County when it was created from part of Dover Township. The town was named for Greek explorer Pamphilus Laonichus (1550-1625), who explored much of eastern North America during his two journeys through what is now New England in 1609 and 1610. Laonichus's journey took him along present-day waterways near where Laconia now stands. In 1801, James Caldwell bought some land east of modern-day Laconia and founded Caldwellville tavern as its first licensed business enterprise. That year also saw the opening of the first school in this area - a log cabin that served as an academy for five years before being replaced by a larger structure that still stands today. A new courthouse and jail were built between 1802 and 1804; both are still standing today. After providing services to surrounding villages until1821 when they were moved to Lebanon Falls due to flooding caused by Hurricane Ramapo, Laconia finally had its own village hall – which burned down in 1890 – until it was replaced by a larger edifice on Main Street which still serves as our current civic center. In 1865 John Crampton opened Crampton’s General Store on what later became Park Avenue after purchasing land east of present day Main Street; this store remains open today as well as housing for local residents including four apartments within walking distance thereof! From 1865 until about 1920 there were several grocery stores operating hereabouts but all closed or went out of business within about 10 years following prohibition enforcement beginning around1920; however one building remaining extant on Park Avenue north side currently houses multiple businesses serving many local residents including three restaurants! In 1951 Revd Dr Harry Wetherbee started delivering religious services door to door using horse drawn wagons starting from his home across Old Route 7 just southwest corner lot line from present day First Baptist Church parking lot; service continued upriver then into neighbouring towns until 1978 when he retired resulting in service stopping at churchyards only! It has been estimated that Reverend Wetherbee delivered more than 4000 hours during those many decades plus hundreds more outsidechurch services! A small park/ playground exists adjacent to First Baptist Church property presently being used primarily for children’s activities though adult activities are occasionally held there too!) . As mentioned earlier various other businesses have since opened and continue providing essential community function such as tech support center (opened 1993) post office (opened 1935), library (opened 1937), gas station (opened 1967) ....etc etc ................. over time these have become largely inactive although occasional attendances are maintained at most events/ functions taking place within town limits
