In 1903 Laconia amalgamated with Granite Falls to form the new town of Granite Falls/Laconia. On July 1, 2010 Laconia had a population of 3,898 residents residing in 757 homes!

Laconia, New Hampshire is a town in Johnson County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. Laconia was founded in 1792 and named for Lieutenant Colonel John Lacon of the Continental Army. In 1807 Laconia became the county seat of Johnson County after it was moved from Concord to its present location by an act of the New Hampshire General Assembly. The first settlement in what is now Johnson County was made by Nicholas Winslow and his family on March 10, 1792 when they set out from Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania with one oxteam and four wagons to establish a trading post on the Waterville River. They called their new settlement "Laconia." The first settler in Laconia was Captain John Fenton who arrived July 12, 1793. He built a cabin near present day downtown Laconia on land grant from Samuel Adams Sr.. In 1807, following the creation of JohnsonCounty as part ofNew Hampshire's bicentennial celebration, Laconia became the county seat after it was moved from Concord to its present location by an act of the New Hampshire General Assembly. At that time there were only five towns in Johnson County: Manchester (now Lebanon), North Conway (later Amesbury), Pittsfield (now Exeter), Manchester Center (later Hampton), and White Sands (later West Hampton). The move gave rise to some controversy because many residents of other towns felt they had been left behind when their respective counties were merged intoJohnson County. In 1827 Lancaster Mayor James Hickey submitted a petition to Congress requesting that his city be admitted as a separate county withinJohnson County; however no action was taken until 1841 when Congress passed an act creatingthe Johnston County District which included Lancaster. As part of Johnston County's growth during Reconstruction period various businesses were established such as hardware store/grocery store, feed store/farmer’s market, bank and lumber mill; several churches also opened up including First Baptist Church and Methodist Episcopal Church which are still standing today across from Interstate 95 southbound exit 6A known locally as “churchtown” due to their prominent place in local history. After Reconstruction ended white flight led by Ulysses S Grant During World War II many Japanese-Americans living in neighboring Kingston fled northeastward towards Maine where theySETTLED IN NEW HAMPSHIRE AND CREATED THE FIRST JAPANESE AMERICAN SCHOOL IN NORTHERN HAMPTON
