After the war ended, many businesses closed or were relocated to other areas because of high taxes and economic times; however, Dartmouth College continued to grow rapidly and by 1990 had outgrown its buildings on Main Street into what is now Dartmouth Village (the old campus). In 2000, Laconia voted to become an incorporated town with government services limited to village status; this change allowed for increased development within town limits but left open the possibility that Dartmouth College may move back outside town if there were ever significant financial challenges or zoning changes that would allow such an increase in development. During Hurricane Irene in 2011-12,[1] much damage took place throughout towns along Lake Winnipesaukee including Laconia which recorded flooding due to overflowing sewers resulting from heavy rains that week.[2][3]
