Laconia is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 2,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham–Chatham–Fayette district. Laconia is on the western border of Durham County and the eastern border of Chatham County. The first European settlers in what would become Laconia were Englishmen who began to arrive in 1723. The area that would make up today's Laconia was called the Land of Green Hills because it was rich in forests and had high mountains around it. The first post office opened in 1812, but it did not stay open very long because many people moved to other towns within Durham and Chatham Counties during that time. The first settler to come through what is now Laconia was William Fenton, who came over with his family on October 10, 1814. Today, there are several restaurants and businesses located within Laconia whose founders contributed to its growth over time. Laconia originally contained only a single cabin which was built by John Aiken in 1815 while he was working for slave trader Ebenezer Cooke on his plantation near present-day downtown Laconia. In 1830, John Aiken's son George Paine donated land to form the nucleus of what would become the town square; this square still contains all of Aiken's original donations from 1830-1870 including several large trees that still stand today! In 1847, two men named Sibley arrived from Canterbury, England with some livestock they had acquired along their journey as traders and pioneers across North America during the mid-19th century searching for land grants or Ranchos east of our current state line! They set about finding a place where they could build permanent homes before eventually choosing Laconia as their home town! From here on out things started happening quickly for both Sibley's group and Lagona itself with numerous contributions from individuals throughout those early years such as: Reverend Charles Bigham (the founder/director/founder pastor at First Congregational Church), Amos Eaton (of Eaton’s Bakery fame), Drilling Creek Tavernkeeper Eli Hinson (later known as “Doc”) & Mrs Cushing (the mother/wife of Rev Charles Bigham). This community spirit continued through into later years when many residents bought property outside traditional methods such as donation drives or purporting to know something about mapping boundaries back then (eager buyers were often able to find new areas for purchase after studying aerial photos!) The first fire department in the area was organized on December 12, 1893. The first store opened in 1898. Today, Laconia is home to a few merchants and several churches including First Presbyterian Church and Mount Zion Lutheran Church.
