When the first settlers arrived in Laconia, they were surprised to find a small town with no weapons. Laconia, New Hampshire is a small town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Manchester–Newton, NH-NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Laconia was founded in 1768 by Loyalists who fled to Canada after the American Revolution. Laconia became a town on February 26, 1810 when it annexed the towns of Bolton and Portsmouth. In 1838, Laconia merged with Portsmouth to become one municipality. On April 15, 1871, Laconia separated from Portsmouth to become its own incorporated village. The village name changed to Laconia on October 1st of that year. The first post office in Laconia was established on January 7th of that year and opened as "Portsmouth". As time passed and mail was more often sent through Norwich or Concord than through Laconia, the post office changed its name back to "Lagonie" on November 30th of that year (the date of incorporation). In 1903, a new Post Office Building was completed at 123 North Main Street which remains present day as the town hall building. On May 3rd 1912 an actwas introduced in the New Hampshire House of Representatives entitled An Act To establish a system for keeping accurate public records throughout this state; And For other purposes . . . This act created what is now known as the Government Accountability Board (GAB). The GAB began operations on July 1st 1912 with fifteen members including six appointed by Governor Robert Wood Johnson II who served until his death in 1968 On September 14th 2006 Granite Broadcasting Corporation announced they would be selling their stations WOBM-TV Channel 5 and WECT-TVChannel 8 to Eversource Energy for $145 million dollars effective November 15th 2006 WOBM-TV vacated their channel 5 allocation and moved up to channel 8 while WECT-TV vacated their channel 8 allocation and moved down to 6

Laconia was founded in 1799 by Captain John Greenfield and his wife Deborah. The first post office in Laconia was established in 1800. Laconia has a rich history that can be traced back to its founding year of 1799 when Captain John Greenfield and his wife Deborah set out from Boston on horseback to found a new community in the rolling hills of Butternut Valley Township. With their hard work and dedication to their community, they quickly became known as one of the most respected families in the area. In 1834, Captain Greenfield's son-in-law Samuel Wigglesworth donated land for a school which would help educate future generations of Laconians. After years of struggle and investment from many individuals and organizations within the community, Laconia finally received its own School District in 1951! Today, Laconia remains an amazing place where people come together to share common interests and experiences – whether it's through music or learning about local history.
Laconia was a small town in New Hampshire until the early 1800s when it became a summer resort. The original Laconia Resort was built in 1805 and consisted of three buildings: a wharf, the inn, and the grocery. In 1807, the wharf was replaced by a more significant building which still stands today; it is known as lighthouse keepers cottage. The first post office in Laconia was established on December 4, 1814. With the opening of Route 2 in 1827, Laconia became an important transportation center for goods moving between Boston and Portsmouth. By 1840, there were over 25 businesses in Laconia with a population of 350 people. In 1850, Laconia had become part of Manchester Township and by 1861 it had become part of Merrimack County. In 1895-96, large sections of both Manchester Township (northwest side) and Merrimack County (southwest side) were transferred from Merrimack County to Addison Township due to pressure from neighboring townships to annex more land into their boundaries. This left only Laconia remaining within Addison Township and its history reflects that extent of change. A fire destroyed most of the mainstay buildings at the lighthouse on October 8, 1978; however, attempts have been made to rebuild since then with support from donations from friends and family members across New Hampshire.. The current lighthouse is open daily 9am-5pm with tours starting at 1pm every day except Mondays where they are closed due to weather conditions
