Laconia is a town in New Hampshire, United States. It was founded in 1764, and is the oldest town in the state. The population was 9,500 at the 2010 census. Laconia is part of the Manchester-tonic region. The first settler was Nicholas Perot who arrived in 1764 from Worcester, England on a ship called "Dolphin". He built and operated a tavern in what is now Laconia for about 20 years before selling it to Increase Mather in 1768. Mather had come to New Hampshire as an Unitarian minister and became one of the first settlers at Laconia. In 1775, he married Mary Wheelock and they moved into a home on Main Street that still stands today. They raised four children: Nicholas (1776-1853), Increase (1778-1859), Martha (1780-1857), and Obadiah (1782-1854). In 1802, when Alfred Thayer purchased land east of present day Route 11 for farming purposes, he named his farm "Thayer's Farm." When Thayer died in 1826 his heirs donated 7 acres of this farmland to be used for town development purposes which began with building of Meeting House Square by local farmers James Fenton and Ebenezer Sprague around 1832. Laconia grew rapidly during its early days with many new homes being built throughout downtown including: Holyoke Place (), Old Tavern Square (), Masonic Lodge Building (), Federal Hall (), Griggs Block () and more recently Church Row (). The population reached 10,000 by 1880 when highwaymen burned down many buildings along Route 11 within easy view of their unsuspecting citizens while robbing wagon trains travelling through the area resulting in over $100 million worth of damage done to property not including loss of life or lost crops/property! A group led by Mayor Israel Putnam formed an organization known as the “People’s Committee” to try to rebuild business districts destroyed by highwaymen as well as build new homes for people living thereabouts; however even after several successful endeavors this ill conceived effort proved fruitless until 1895 when putative developer Archibald Butt attended a meeting held at Simpson’s storeroom adjacent tocongregational church on School Street whereupon he came up with a plan that would result in most houses reaching current levels today includingHolyoke Place(),Old Tavern Square(), Masonic Lodge Building(), Federal Hall (), Griggs Block()and more recently Church Row (). On July 15th 1902 voters approved incorporation under charter number 59401 giving rise therebyto name change from “Hampshire County Borough”to “Laconia Townshend County Borough” effective November 1st 1902 having also reverted back thereto upon dissolution followingNH General Election 1896)

A post office was established here in 1806. Laconia became an incorporated town in 1892. It had a population of 2,564 as of the 2000 census.
Laconia, New Hampshire is a town in Otter Tail County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,542 at the 2010 census. The first settlers to Laconia were the Stevens brothers who arrived in 1795. They built the first house on what is now Main Street. The town was platted in 1800 by Captain John Dall and his wife Hannah. The name of the town originated from a legend which said that an angel named Laconia visited the area and left behind instructions for how to build a church and a school in Laconia. In 1802, Elijah Howe founded another settlement called Northumberland which later merged into Laconia. In 1825, George White organized a Methodist Episcopal congregation in Laconia and it remains one of the largest churches in town today. In 1830, Barnabas Morse constructed Pierce's Mill which became one of the largest mills in New England. It still operates today as a small family-owned business with over 120 employees working at its operations center located on Main Street near downtown Laconia. A post office was established at Lagonie in 1828, but it never grew very large due to competition from larger towns such as Lebanon and Concord. In 1839, Congress passed an act providing for township organization within Otter Tail County; thus, Lagonie was created as part of the new township of Manchester upon Merrimack (later Newton). In 1850s there were many mills closed down due to competition from faster growing towns such as Derby or Lawrenceville; however, Pierce's Mill continued to operate until 1907 when it went out of business because of technological advances made by automobiles! A fire destroyed much of downtown Manchester upon Merrimack during World War II so most activity stopped until after that time however some stores have reopened since then including Gildersleeve’s store which once occupied what is now Main Street across from Starbucks!
