Laconia, New Hampshire is a town in and the county seat of Laconia County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 5,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portsmouth metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Laconia was Nicholas Whipple in 1799. One hundred years later, John Dickinson established a gristmill there and another mill soon followed. In 1834, Amos Kendall founded the Kendall Paper Mill which became one of the leading paper mills in America. The townspeople built several churches including First Baptist Church (1834), Second Baptist Church (1850), and Third Methodist Episcopal Church (1904). In 1892, Laconia erected its first schoolhouse which still stands today. In 1915-16 when Route 6A was extended east from Manchester to Nashua and through Laconia it was called "Laconia Road". When that road was realigned to its present route in 1966-67 it became "Route 6A" again as part of that highway's reformation. The community experienced significant growth following World War II with an influx of veterans and their families who helped start businesses such as Saugerties Mills and Hudson’s Bay Packing Company Ltd., both located along Route 6A. Today many small businesses dominate the local economy including four pharmacies—Allis Chalmers Pharmacy (founded 1912), Wellbutrin Pharmaceuticals Inc., Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc., and Roche Diagnostics AG—and two grocery stores: Hannaford Supermarkets plc./First Union Supermarkets plc.(founded 1950) and Shoprite Foods Inc./Walgreens Co.-owned Thrifty Meats(founded 1984). A new shopping center known as The Mall opened on Main Street near Route 6A/Route 12 on July 1, 2009 after being developed over 10 years by J&J Development Company LLC., wholly owned by JCPenney Corporation.[1] [2] Laconia has been awarded numerous distinction throughout its history including being named one of America’s Most Liveable Towns by WalletHub in 2017,[3][4] being selected as a “ Greatest American Town” by Forbes Magazine[5],[6] recipient of the prestigious National Award for Economic Growth from NH Governor Maggie Hassan,[7] being included among America’s Top10 Best Places to Live by Forbes magazine[8], receiving accolades from NH Governor Maggie Hassan for her designation as a “Best Place to Work”,[9] becoming one of only five towns inNH to be granted a Silver Medal award from NASDAQ OMX Europe for excellence within their local economy – again congratulations to all those who have made this wonderful place their home!

Laconia, New Hampshire is a small town in the heart of the state of New Hampshire. The population was 521 at the 2010 census. Laconia is located on the border of Hillsborough and Manchester counties, about 25 miles northeast of Boston. It is part of the Portsmouth-Newport News Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Town of Laconia was organized in 1798 from parts of Hillsborough and Manchester Counties. In 1800, it became a station on the Underground Railroad that aided escaped slaves to freedom in Canada. On November 1, 1851, Laconia became one of the first towns in New Hampshire to have electric lights. In 1862, Laconia was chosen as site for a military post during the American Civil War because it offered a deep well for water supply while other locations were short on water supplies or had no convenient access to water. The fortifications that remain today were built at what is now Herald Square in downtown Laconia and at Fort Hill (now West Park) on Cape Hatteras Island; both sites are open to public visitation today. On October 14, 1797, John Adams signed an act authorizing creation of a town in Company G (the Second Continental Congress), which would be called "Laconia." The company laid out its square block with four streets running north-south and two east-west; it included seven buildings: three stores and two churches - Stake House #1and#2 - were built by George Washington himself as part of his inauguration celebrations on April 20th 1799 before he set off for England with his wife Martha Washington; all were abandoned after his return but still stand as examples of early North Atlantic architecture On December 12th 1800 Samuel Sewall Jr., also fromNH founded "Sewall's Wharf" being one stop along the Underground Railroad run by fugitive slaves escaping to Canada This wharf served as another stop until 1850 when NH started building Ferry Landing located near present day Portsmouth Naval Shipyard which acted as main embarkation point for U S Navy vessels transporting soldiers and sailors back home
Laconia was a town in New Hampshire from 1768 to 1837. After being part of Massachusetts for many years, it became a separate town in 1768 and remained so until 1837. The first settler in Laconia was Samuel Whitcomb, who arrived in 1768.
