In 1812, the town reached its peak population with over 1,500 people. However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Laconia sided with the Union side and suffered extensive damage from Confederate artillery fire. After the war ended, many of Laconia's businesses collapsed and cessation ensued until around 1920 when new growth resumed. Today, Laconia remains an important cultural center in NH – hosting annual events such as Fairey’s Landing Festival and arts festivals such as The Shakespeare Festival – while also providing opportunities for educational programming both indoors and outdoors.
Laconia was founded in 1786 by Capt. Johnrimus Caldwell, a Loyalist who fled to the New Hampshire Colony during the American Revolution. The town grew up around a small mill on the river and became an important trading center for local farmers and traders. Laconia was named after the Greek city of Laon, which was located about 20 miles west of present-day Laconia.
