The first Europeans to visit Laconia were the French in 1764 and the British in 1768. The first permanent settler in what is now Laconia was Ebenezer Harmon on December 10, 1810. Harmon had come from Marblehead, Massachusetts with his family and land grant from General John Adams. In 1814 he married Maria Higginson of Portsmouth and they settled on a farm known as Harmony Hill west of town. In 1820 Harmon built a white "Fenway" frame house which still stands today as one of the few remaining examples of Federal architecture in this appellation (the others being Plymouth Meeting House). In 1830 Samuel Morse set up shop here as an instrument maker before moving to Pittsfield two years later to open his own store and transmitter business called The Pittsfield Telegraph Company which became America's first electric telegraph service. After Samuel Morse's death in 1837 his company was bought by Western Union who moved it several times before finally settling it here in 1865 after completing their transatlantic cable route under Lake George between Boston and New York City.
