The town was once home to one of the largest rifle clubs in America, and its members used local Ammunition stores for ammunition supplies. Ammunition production began here in 1805 when two Germans founded a small company called The Vetter Company. This company manufactured pistol cartridges using federal primers and case molds made in England. The first pistols built with Vetter cartridges were sold at auction on December 5th, 1805. In 1820, another German-owned company named Henschel & Sohn began producing shotgun rounds as well as rifle projectiles and shot shells out of an old blacksmith shop on High Street. At this point, munitions manufacturing had become firmly rooted within the community and gradually evolved into what it is today- a thriving industry with over 100 years of experience! Laconia, New Hampshire is a small town in the Granite State of New Hampshire. Laconia is located on Route 124 and ZIP code 03609. The population was 5,782 at the 2010 census, up from 4,711 at the 2000 census. Laconia is part of the Concord-Wareham-Keene micropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Laconia were Native American tribes who were known for their hunting and fishing abilities. A post office called Laconia was established in 1836, and the town was incorporated as a village in 1903. Laconia has been home to many famous people including James Fenton who served as governor of New Hampshire from 1974 to 1982 and John Lennon who lived there for a time while he wrote his songs "Can You See Me?" and "Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)" before moving back to Liverpool, England. In 1984, Neil Armstrong made history when he became the first human being to walk on Mars when he visited Laconia during his Apollo 11 mission. Today, Laconia remains an agricultural center with crops such as wheat, corn, potatoes, applesauce, eggs and chicken products being produced along with some manufacturing companies such as Boeing Aircraft Parts Inc., which manufactures parts for airplanes. The town also has a few small businesses that provide services such as lawn care or pet walking so that residents can get out into their community more often.
