Keene, New Hampshire is a town in and the county seat of Keene County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 9,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portsmouth-Manchester metropolitan area. The first permanent European settler in what is now Keene was Nicholas Brendon in 1636. Over time, other English settlers arrived as well including John Woolridge in 1640 and Samuel Chase in 1675. The town was chartered on July 1, 1798 by Governor Jonathan Trumbull as an act to promote manufactures and commerce within the state of New Hampshire. An early millrace became an important water supply for the town and later for larger settlements around it. In 1802, George Stephenson built his locomotive engine "New England" here at what is today's Depot Square (the original village square). Stephenson had been appointed engineer for building a new canal from Manchester through Keene to Portsmouth via Lebanon and Goffstown. He designed this line with 2 miles (3 km) of track starting at a point near present day US Route 3 south of the White Mountains and running northwest to join up with NH Route 128 just north of Plattsburgh Junction. In 1814 he built a second locomotive engine called "Lake Shore"; this one ran between lake Winnipesaukee (now Lake Placid) east of Kingston Plain west acrossNH Route 128 to connect with NH Route 604 just west of Dovercourt Junction; Stephenson himself pulled both engines overland from Kingston Plain to Dovercourt Junction! In addition to these two locomotives there were several small steam locomotives used on various routes throughout the 19th century; all but one were diagrammed by George Stephenson himself! The towns growth slow due largely to lack of transportation options until after World War I when railroad construction began serving larger markets such as Boston, Providence, Hartford and Portland Maine etc.. During World War II much activity occurred centered around production at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard which produced submarines such as USS Hornet (SSN-611), USS Enterprise (CV-6), USS Lexington CV-2 etc.; however none took place locally within or near Town limits
