Keene is a town in New Hampshire, United States. It was founded on the Keene River by Revolutionary War veterans in 1775. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in what is now Keene were Native Americans who hunted and gathered around the falls on the river. In 1775, veteran soldiers from New Hampshire assessed land surrounding present-day Keene and decided to establish a new town there. On October 12, 1775, General John Stark established the town of Keene on land that he had surveyed just north of present-day downtownKeene. At its founding, the town consisted of about 50 settlers and was governed by a board of thirteen men chaired by Colonel Nathaniel Thornton. In 1802, when North Carolina became a state within the United States, Keene became part of that state as well; however, it reverted back to New Hampshire control until 1861 when it became an independent city under Republican rule following the American Civil War against Confederate forces. During Reconstruction times (1868-1877), Keeners voted for Democratic candidates but generally resisted efforts to revive cotton plantations throughout much of New England due to their fear that such endeavors would contribute significantly to white Southerners’ gains at office during Reconstruction. However, some keenerians did support black suffrage during this time period as it seemed important for African Americans to have access not only to education but also jobs opportunities outside their homes once they reached adulthood and could support themselves financially without depending upon white patronage or assistance. After Reconstruction ended in 1877 and white supremacy returned across much of America through policies such as carpetbagging (ending social benefits enjoyed bycolored citizens), blacklisting (inhibiting businesses from hiring certain employees because they were considered “suspicious” or “not upstanding” enough), Jim Crow laws (ensuring separate seating for whites only inside public buildings), quotas for blacks in various fields (such as engineering) – all while denying African Americans basic civil rights – keenerians began pushing for comprehensive racial equality which eventually led to passage of The Civil Rights Act Of 1964 which outlawed discrimination based on race nationwide within business entities including restaurants and transportation systems alike Keenes unemployment rate continued rising into the late 1970s until programs like Project Head Start helped stimulate economic growth in this area Finally after years of hard work by many individuals & organizations over many years we are seeing progress being made towards reopening our community post 9/11
